Getting coaching clients causes anxiety, stress, overthinking, feelings of lack, confusion and overwhelm ?All common things new and experienced coaches a like experience when trying to get coaching clients.
The dream of wanting to coach full time, of doing what you love, making a difference, getting paid well to do it and the idea of financial freedom keeps us pushing on, but often with a feeling inside that it will never happen and it seems so far away …..
This is on the mind of many a coach or therapist whilst on that fruitless task of finding coaching clients.
This is understandable, you did your training, you honed your craft, but no-one told you how to get coaching clients. So where are all the people queuing up to have their life transformed? No where to be seen ?
Why??? Let me tell you the top 5 mistakes myself and others have made when starting out so you can avoid a whole tone of oh shits! Here goes, eyes and ears open ……
Being needy is creepy
If you ‘neeeeeeeeed’ clients, this is guaranteed to put clients off. Any wiff of you needing them to work with you, they will run for the hills after than Usain Bolt!
Remove your need for money from the equation, your potential clients need you, not the other way around!
Trying to sell them coaching
Trying to sell someone the idea of coaching or you does not work, people need to be sold on the idea of them, it is ALL about them, we are all self obsessed!
You are irrelevant and simply the vessel, help them craft the idea of their best self, help them identify and connect with who that is.
Be fussy about who you work with
‘I will work with anyone’ is not going to go in your favour. It’s a disaster zone waiting to happen.
That is a practice full of non committed clients, frustrations for you, a waste of money for them. It gives the message to the universe ‘I want more of the same’ of whatever you say yes to!
Decide who you want to work with and be clear about that.
Not checking client commitment
Give potential clients a task to do. After completing it you can talk more about coaching, not before, after, just to be clear, I said after ? what did I say? ……. Yes thats right, after!
This does three things.
- Gives you insight
- Starts them on their journey
- Shows client commitment
If people will not complete a simple task, are they likely to embrace your coaching? …… No
Is this someone you want to work with? ……. No
Do I need to chase them up? …… No
Not being clear
Being wishy washy is no good, you need to be able to clearly present your coaching in a way that is simple and clear (There is a reason I called my business Simply Clear Coaching! – Two of my favourite things).
If you are not clear then how is someone going to invest time, money and emotions in you? I wouldn’t.
I would want to know how the sessions are laid out, frequency, what we can achieve and clear cost.
If you cannot do that in a few sentences, start to fine tune it!
You never know what brief context you may need to describe your coaching in, the coffee shop, a networking event, opportunities are waiting at every turn, be ready!
Onwards and upwards
So somethings to get you thinking about! If this has made sense to you, start implementing it today!
And if you know anyone who might benefit from avoiding these 5 mistakes, then please do share, it means the world to me to have successful coaches everywhere, changing the word for good.
Cheer’s to a life of coaching success.
